Let’s Puts Some Light on Bicycle Lights.

This article only covers daytime running lights, that is lights used so that we may be seen by other cyclists, cars,  or pedestrians during daylight hours.  Some information on night time lights can be found on our website under the bars to the far right, then resources, then Ohio bike laws, then section 4511.56, signal devices on bicycles. https://silverwheelscyclingclub.wildapricot.org/Ohio-Bike-Laws

The use of daytime lights does make us more visible, thus safer.  It is said that the use of daytime lights can reduce cycling accidents by 15% to 36%.  Silver Wheelers apparently think that makes it worthwhile, as evidenced by their increased use by our members .  Lights are especially effective on dark or rainy days, in tunnels, under bridges and to give us peace of mind at the end of an afternoon ride.  You should still wear bright clothing.

The next videos will provide some information on the safety value of daytime lights.

Some things to consider when selecting lights:

1.   A good choice is to select a USB rechargeable light that will last for the longest ride that you may do.
2.   You will generally pay more for brighter or longer lasting lights.
3.   Lumens are a measure of the amount of light a device generates.  The lumens rating is found on most bicycle light packaging for sale today.  50 to 150 lumens is a good place to start.  Try the light out at the bike shop to see if you think it is powerful enough for you. The object is to be seen from about 500 feet away.   Flashing lights are an attention getter and will extend the run time for a given lumen rating.  A chart on the light’s box will give you a good idea of how long the light will last in the particular mode you select.  The longer the light lasts, the more it will cost, and the larger it will be.  It will also take a little longer to recharge.  Non re-chargeable lights are a viable option.
4.   Lights can be mounted almost anywhere on the bike that makes them visible to others.  Front handle bars and rear seat stays are popular.  Visibility is reduced if the lights are not aimed directly forward or backward.  Some models have an adjustment that allows for mounting on non-vertical surfaces.

Some Drawbacks to daytime running lights are:

1.   Mounting the lights can be challenging.  Look to see how other people with a similar bike have mounted their lights.  Select a light that has more than one mounting option.
2.   You must remember to recharge your light often.  In most cases you will have to supply your own USB charger.
3.   Cost of this type of light varies between 25 and 100 dollars as of early 2025.
4.   Rear lights can be too bright at times.  This usually occurs during times of low visibility.  Some of the more powerful front lights can be annoying to on- coming drivers, if not aimed properly.
5.   Very bright flashing lights can cause a "strobe" effect which can cause a loss of depth perception.

YouTube has many videos that review various types of daytime running lights for bicycles. If you like shopping from home, the YouTube channel is a good place to start.

More and more riders believe that front and rear daytime running lights can help prevent accidents and there is a good variety of lights available at reasonable prices.

So light up your bike when you ride off into the unknown.
